It was definitely a great day to get ready to go to school in Troy. Lincoln Community Center (LCC), 110 Ash Street in Troy, had approximately 325 students and their families lined up from the front door and down the block for the annual “Back to School Bash” on August 20th, 2017.
The event offered food, refreshments, free haircuts and school supplies so each student would look and feel great about the new academic year. LCC also had representatives from local agencies present to provide information on services and programs that are available to area youth. Troy Rotarians, and the Troy Rotary Foundation, donated nearly 100 backpacks and many of the supplies necessary for a successful school experience, including: wide ruled paper, pocket folders, block erasers, glue sticks, boxes of tissues, 3-ring binders, calculators, and backpacks for youth and teens. “The support of our sponsors is a critical component to the success of this annual event,” shared Shane Carter, executive director of LCC and a Rotarian. “The students feel that support and appreciate what the local community does to help them be successful,” added Carter. In addition to Troy Rotary Club, other sponsors included: ALN Senior Care & Home Services, Kona Ice, Truth Seekers, Damsel in Defense, Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Greater Miami Valley, Miami County Juvenile Court, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Troy Salon & Day Spa, Faurecia Exhaust, Creative Labels, Troy Rec, MT Studio, Level MB Construction, MainSource Bank, Unity National Bank, Hobart Corporation/ITW Food Equipment Group, Brush Creek Church of God, First Baptist Church of Troy, and various community/corporate volunteers.
Lincoln Community Center offers educational programs, recreational facilities, and tools that cater to patrons of all ages. One important program is the After School Enrichment Program. This offering helps participating students propel themselves forward successfully and is open to all area school children. It is free and staffed by current and former educators. To learn more about all programs available, visit the center’s website at www.lcctroy.com. Troy Rotarians and the Troy Rotary Foundation support several community projects annually. During the 2016-17 Rotary year over $16,000 in scholarships and community aid was distributed from the fund. Their programs and initiatives include: support for Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, Rotary’s annual Shoe Project, academic and community service scholarships, and sponsorships to summer camps at Brukner Nature Center, and WACO Air Museum. In addition to financial support, Troy Rotarians volunteered nearly 400 hours to several service projects. The Troy Rotary Club is a member-involved, goal-oriented service club focused on socio/economic issues that have an impact both locally and internationally.
